First known as Randolph, the Brea area experienced an oil boom in the late 1800’s. At that time, many oil riggers came to town along with their families and small tent villages sprang up around the oil wells. The Union Oil Company drilled the first wells and it wasn’t long before the hills were dotted with the wooden oil towers of the day. The little village of Randolph was built near Olinda in 1908 to house all the oil workers and their families. The name is said to be for Epes Randolph who was an engineer for the Pacific Electric Railway that stopped here on is way between Los Angeles and Yorba Linda. The oil boom was short-lived, however, many of the workers stayed in the area. The name was changed to Brea in 1911. On 23 February, 1917, Brea became an incorporated city.
